Facts about Snakes & Hearts, a 2015 poetry chapbook by Flower Conroy

You Refused to Leave

the unsaid, unsaid & I somewhither, wander-
lusting among the hedgerows
in the small hours. My footfalls,
like dye seeping through the memory
of blooms & the blooms themselves,
clairvoyant, broken-necked in their dis-
integrating urns, darken like silk
dragged thru sea. The solipsistic
manner in which they stare, all eye, at the abandon
their shadows scatter across the pavers
I navigate—rattles me. And when you find me
you startle me, I did not hear you
approaching, & before

whatever it is that will befall—in the hairs-
breadth of glance, smoldering tinder, a myth-
ological sky, or perhaps, ships glazing
over the crux of the world—I affix
my fingers to your about to mouth.
