(3-6 poems)

Creative Nonfiction

Comics/Original Art
(Only black-and-white images)

If your work does not fit neatly into one of our existing criterion—fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, comics/original art—consider our “Hybrid” category, where form determination is of no importance.

Save submissions as one document (doc, docx, rtf, txt, jpg, or png). Submit via Submittable. Cover letters are encouraged, but not required. HFR debuts one issue a year. Only one submission at a time: the editors will get to your work as fast as they can. Allow 30-90 days for a response, inquire after 120, although we pride ourselves in responding sooner. Simultaneous submissions are allowed. Please notify us immediately if your submitted work has been accepted for publication elsewhere. HFR does not accept work that has been previously published elsewhere. Upon acceptance, HFR takes first serial rights to the work. Upon publication, all rights revert back to the author. Should the accepted work appear elsewhere after its publication in HFR, be sure to list HFR as its original publisher. HFR is unable to pay contributors. Print contributors receive a print copy of the issue in which they are published.

    1. I forgot to add our general guidelines statement from the submissions page, but we would prefer writers to submit to one category at a time, and wait for our response, which usually comes quickly, before re/submitting to another category. Thanks. Added that paragraph above for other inquiries.
